It's time to do away with the NFL draft entirely

I say this as someone who never has participated in marijuana and never has participated in the NFL draft, though I have observed both phenomena countless times at close range.

(I might be swimming upstream without pads on these matters, but I believe, as Irish statesman Edmund Burke once said, "One man, with conviction, makes Randy Bullock Elite Jersey a majority.")

I won't delve into the marijuana issue in too much detail after all, this is, technically, by the loosest of definitions, a "sports column" but, suffice to say, as a sporting libertarian, I reckon that most activities should be allowed if they do not encroach on others' rights, particularly in the comfort of your home. I mean, I like to play Racko while watching "Taxi" reruns on chilly winter evenings; if my next door neighbor prefers to roll a joint while watching "America's Funniest Home Videos," why shouldn't he?

Sure, I realize if you eliminate the NFL draft, this nation's GNP would be reduced by 4 percent. These are all pretty effective gimmicks if you can get away with it, and the NFL gets away with it 17 Sundays a year in broad daylight.

This doesn't make it fair for the NFL's worker bees; their place of work is determined for them. The rest of us deal in a free market.

Let's look at my own personal example:

Coming out of college in 1981, I was one of the top sportswriting candidates in the nation, considered a "five tool prospect" I could type, report, interview, write and write for power. I was lucky enough to land with The Washington Post, and from there, developed into the non award winning, couch slouching columnist I am today.

(I did not speak Spanish fluently at the time, thus I would've pursued work in which the language barrier could be overcome.)

Granted, it would be difficult to challenge the draft. A draft eligible player would need to sue the NFL, it could take years to grind through the judicial system and, if it makes it way to the highest court in the land, need I remind you that Supreme Court justices often have sat in luxury boxes at Redskins games.

Another benefit of ending the NFL draft: No "Draft Day II" coming to a theater near you.

By the way, I just had a brilliant, out of the box thought, the kind of thought, I imagine, one gets when smoking reefer in the event the NFL draft remains an annual staple, a team like the Cleveland Browns might benefit from making picks while high.

On the other hand, Kiper, on cannabis, over three days, on live TV? That just might scare someone straight.

The best player on one of the best defenses in college football in 2013 was rewarded as such by the NFL draft, but the same wasn't true of some of Darqueze Dennard's closest cohorts.

Bullough did not play in the 24 20 Rose Bowl win over Stanford because he was suspended for a still undisclosed violation of team rules. Campbell Trophy as the top scholar athlete in the country was a talking point at the NFL scouting combine.

Bullough said he divulged the issue to every NFL team and refused to discuss it outside of that.

It's unclear whether that hurt his stock. Some analysts had him as high as a third round pick. Others had him going late in the draft, citing his lack of high end speed and lateral quickness.

Other MSU free agent signings were revealed after the draft, including defensive tackle Tyler Hoover to Indianapolis, defensive tackle Micajah Reynolds to New Orleans, receiver Bennie Fowler to Denver, offensive lineman Fou Fonoti to San Francisco and offensive lineman Dan France to Cincinnati joining Dennard, Lewis and veteran MSU alum Domata Peko.

Offensive lineman Blake Treadwell, quarterback Andrew Maxwell, linebacker Kyler Elsworth and defensive end Denzel Drone are other MSU seniors hoping for free agent deals.

He was then snubbed by the major college all star games and the NFL scouting combine, and snubbed again on draft day.

The 5 foot 10, 208 pound Lewis was All Big Ten first team as a senior, as selected by league coaches, and a three year starter for the Spartans.

He had 227 tackles and 26 passes defended eight picks and 18 break ups and finished 10th in MSU history with 158 interception return yards. The most memorable 39 came on a pick of a Denard Robinson pass for a touchdown in 2011, clinching a 28 14 win for the Spartans.

The 2013 season also served as a redemption tour for Lewis. He was sent to block a punt late in the 2011 Big Ten championship game in his hometown of Indianapolis, and his penalty for running into the punter ended the Spartans' chances of coming back against Wisconsin.

As a senior, Lewis returned to Lucas Oil Stadium in his hometown and helped MSU beat Shiloh Keo Limited Jersey Ohio State 34 24 to claim the Big Ten title and Rose Bowl bid. He had a career high 13 tackles and a pass break up against the Buckeyes.
